“A Harold Knott was born May 22, 1883, in Toronto, Canada (christened Arthur Harold DeWitt Knott) to Elijah Edward Knott and Anna Reynolds Knott. His grandparents, of English and Anglo-Irish stock, had moved from Ireland in the mid-nineteenth century to the Georgian Bay area (Lake Huron) of Canada. Harold’s father moved his family to Burlington, Vermont, in 1886. Harold and his elder sister Lillian grew up in Burlington. Though there was some history of service in the British Army on both sides of his family, and young Harold was sent briefly to a military boarding school, the military mode was not to his taste, and he received his early educatio
