Biography Daniel Casey
Daniel Casey was born in Bordeaux, to Irish parents, and was a lifelong friend of the artist Ford Madox Brown. The two first met at the Antwerp Academy, sharing lodgings at the Hotel du Pot d’Etain. They moved to Paris soon after and it was here, in 1846, that Brown’s wife sadly died from consumption; Casey assisted in raising funds to send her body back to England. Although Casey stayed in France - exhibiting at the Salon - and Brown returned to England, the two remained lifelong friends.
When Casey died Ford Madox Brown organised for Frederick Stephens to write his obituary and also raffled two paintings (Horses in a storm by Casey and Platt Lane, 1884, Tate Britain, by himself) as prizes to raise money for his widow and family.
