Portrait painter Abraham Delanoy, born in 1742 in New York City, was the second American to go to London to study with history painter Benjamin West. Delanoy may be one of the young men who figure in "The American School," 1765, a painting by Matthew Pratt of West and his pupils.
Having been under West's instruction in London, Delanoy enjoyed certain advantages helping his prospects for a career in America. His early work bore a likeness of his teacher, examples are included in the New York Historical Society, New York City. Though mask-like in expression, the work reveals basic sophistication in its conscious, though not harsh modeling and gracious turn of the head.
