Edward Dalton Marchant (1806-1887)
Born in Edgartown, Massachusetts Edward Dalton Marchant studied with Gilbert Stuart in Boston in 1825 but was mostly self taught. In 1828 he settled in Worcester, Massachusetts and painted portraits of prominent residents.
In the 1830s and 1840s, Marchant was in New York City painting portraits of political figures and prominent merchants and received portrait commissions from other cities as well. He settled in Philadelphia in 1854 and remained there for 30 years.
