Biography Allen Blagden
Born into a family of artists in Salisbury, Connecticut, he began painting as a student at Hotchkiss School in Northwest Connecticut. His father, Thomas Blagden, was his first art teacher. At a time when abstraction was the prevalent style, he stayed with realism in the tradition of Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper and Andrew Wyeth. His technique is to begin with a linear pencil drawing and to build up layer upon layer of watercolor, often working with dry brush. He likes the quiet tonalities of dawn and twilight and rejects vivid color. His awards include Allied American Artists, 1964; Century Association, 1970; and National Academy of Design: Certificate of Merit, 1976.
