Biography Giovanni Andrei
Born at Carrara, Italy, Giovanni Andrei came to America to do sculptural work with Giuseppe Franzoni, his brother-in-law, on the Capitol Building in Washington DC. He carved mantels on the east wall of the Senate Chamber, and in Baltimore, he completed a lunette for the Union Bank. The lunette was subsequently moved to the Peale Museum. He also did a sketch of the British destruction of the House of Representatives, a piece that has great historical significance.
In 1815, he briefly returned to Italy, and then came back to Washington where he died in 1825.
