The Reading Public Museum, Reading, Pennsylvania, received this important Civil War Florida battle scene, Repulse at Olustee as a gift from John A. Rigg in 1914, the date used by the Reading Museum on its accession and catalog records.
While little is known about the artist, H. Dreher, the museum records note that H. Dreher of Allentown, Pennsylvania, was a battle painter born in Germany in 1858. Maybelle Mann reprints this large and impressive oil in her Art in Florida 1564-1945 but chooses to discuss a later lithographic version by Kurz and Allison issued in 1894 also included in her text.
