Harry Callahan (1912-1999)
Born in Detroit, Harry Callahan went to Michigan State University for three semesters. The natural landscape was a subject that occupied Harry Callahan throughout his career. A farmer's son with no formal training in the arts, Callahan became an acclaimed experimental photographer and renowned teacher of photography in 1946 at the Chicago Institute of Design.
Inspired by photographer Ansel Adams - who was already known for his Western landscape vistas - Callahan had a powerful attraction to his home landscape of rural Michigan.
