Helen Lewis Cassell was born in Lynn, MA on Aug. 28, 1893. Helen Lewis settled in Los Angeles in 1905. She was educated at Hollywood High School and the State Normal School (now UCLA). In 1913 she studied with James E. McBurney in Laguna Beach. Her marriage to John Cassell ended in divorce about 1935. Eucalypti and the coast near Laguna Beach were often the subjects of her plein-air landscapes. She taught art in several high schools in the Los Angeles area before her death in Camarillo, CA on April 4, 1965.
