Hubert FitzGerald was born on June 20, 1923 in Jeanette, Pennsylvania. FitzGerald began his formal art training at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh until his schooling was interrupted by service with the Army Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in World War II. Following the war, FitzGerald returned to Carnegie Mellon and received a bachelor of fine arts degree in painting and design.
FitzGerald began his professional career as a creative designer for Alcoa in Pittsburgh. In 1950, he moved to Lancaster, Pa. where he worked for Armstrong World Industries as an advertising designer. In the 1960s, he transferred to Armstron
