Biography Jacques Arago
Aboard the French vessel the "Uranie" commanded by Captain Louis de Freycinet, Jacques Arago was the senior documentary artist when the ship traveled to Hawaii in 1819. He, with junior draftsman, Adrien Taunay the Younger, did numerous images of the of the people and landscapes at a time when Hawaii was becoming a whaling center and part of the trade route with China.
One of the special events depicted by Arago was the baptism during a shipboard ceremony of the high chief Kalanimoku.
