Engraver and portrait painter James Claypoole Jr. began engraving
around 1761, noted in Philadelphia. Because his name is James
Claypoole Jr., it is assumed he was the cousin of Matthew Pratt
and son of James Claypoole Sr., and most likely began his art education
with his father. Family researchers find the following evidence linking the two men: James Claypoole Sr. married Rebecca White on 24 May 1742, at Christ Church, Philadelphia. Joseph White Jr.'s (brother of Rebecca) 1754 will states "I Give, Devise and Bequeath unto my Nephew James Claypole the Son of James and Rebecca Claypole...."
