Biography Jean Baptiste Belin de Fontenay I
Jean-Baptiste Blin de Fontenay worked at the court of Louis XIV. He was a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer (1636-1699), whose daughter he married, and whom he also succeeded later as a flower painter in the famous French tapestry. He also created floral murals for numerous royal castles such as Fontainebleau and Versailles.
The style of Blin de Fontenay, who had trained at the famous studio of Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer, follows that of his master, but is also very individual. Due to the particularly skilful portrayal of materials such as marble and elaborately carved ornate metals, he embodied in his work even more than his teacher the "Versailles" style of flower painting.
