Jerry Doyle, Philadelphia Record (1898 – 1986)
A strong supporter of Franklin Roosevelt’s domestic and foreign policies, Doyle was the editorial cartoonist for the Philadelphia Record and the Philadelphia Daily News.
He was the winner of the 1942 Association of American Editorial Cartoonists’ National Headliner Award and created, through one of his cartoon characters, the expression “John Q. Public.” (Some sources attribute John Q. Public to Vaughn Shoemaker, another editorial cartoonist whose work appears on this site).
In 1943 a collection of Doyle’s cartoons was published as “According to Doyle: A Cartoon History of World War II.”
