Jessie Andrews became a landscape painter and poet as well as a teacher. She was born in Washington Mississippi, and in 1873 arrived in Texas with her family, which included her artist sister, Fannie Andrews. She started classes at the University of Texas in 1883 and graduated in 1886, receiving a diamond and gold medal from the male graduates for academic distinction and for a special welcome to the alumni association.
