Biography Joe Milone
Five pieces of "sculptural art" were done by Joe Milone and exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in December, 1942. According to the story, Joe worked in a laundry and shined shoes. Louise Nevelson's studio was near by and it was she who introduced him to MOMA curator, Dorothy Miller. She brought it to the attention of Alfred H Barr, Jr. the Director of the museum.
Ms. Nevelson "predicted that the shoe-shine box would eventually win its proper place in art and that it had not already done so because its simple qualities which make it a masterpiece have failed to be recognized yet."
