John Johnston

 (1751 - 1818)
John Johnston was active/lived in Massachusetts.  John Johnston is known for portrait, genre, still life, copyist.

Biography   John Johnston

One of early Boston's best portrait painters, his subjects from 1780 to 1912 are a virtual "who's who" of Boston including Samuel Adams and the visiting George Washington.

He worked with many instructors in Boston including his painting teacher, John Gore, and his father, Thomas Johnston. He was regarded in Boston at that time as the most prolific pattern maker for embroidery works, many of them resulting from the miniatures he did on ivory and silk.

It is possible that he sometimes traced prints for his embroidery designs. He had a large portfolio from which to choose, and his actual portraits are skillfully executed with an appealing subtlety and reality of hair, color and skin.
