Biography Jose Aragon
Active in New Mexico between 1820 and 1835, he was a who was unusual in that he signed and dated his work. He is not to be confused with Jose Rafael Aragon (who lived between 1796 and 1862).
His inscriptions often refer to his sculpture workshop (esculteria) where he and his associates worked. Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception is in the collection of the Colorado Springs Art Center. She is described as being "in a perfect state of innocence, in a simple shawl with a wreath of flowers and a dove on her breast, surrounded by a garland of cherubs. (85)
