From Orgaz, near Toledo, Spain, Juan Sanchez Cotán has an ongoing reputation for chiaroscuro still-life painting, although he also did primarily religious subjects after 1604, when he became a monk in the Carthusian monastery at Granada.  His signature style is arranged vegetable still lifes on a ledge or shelf, which gives them a geometric stability. "Each form is scurtinized with such intensity that the pictures take on a mystical quality, conveying a feeling of wonder and humility in front of the humblest items in God's creation." (Web)
