the age of 19, Julia Hinshaw was shown in the 1880 census (June 11 1880)
as living in a boarding house in Batavia, Genesee County, New York.
later studied art with Charles Melville Dewey in New York and married
her teacher on May 3, 1887. She maintained a studio at 222 West
23rd St., New York City, which the census of 1890 showed as their
Julia exhibited at the National Association of Women
Painters and Sculptors (where she was one of the first presidents); the
National Academy of Design from 1898; The Trans-Mississippi Expo,
Omaha, Neb. in 1898. She was
