Kay Brown (1932-2012)
African American artist Kay Brown was known for representing issues that affected the global Black community with her mixed media collages She was a member of the Weusi Collective, named for the Swahili word for “blackness”, which was founded in 1965. As the only female member of this group, she found there needed to be a better way to empower African American women artists.
Brown and fiber artist Dindga McCannon formed Where We At! Black Women Artists, Inc. in the spring of 1971. The group was comprised of fourteen women who explored themes such as the unity of the Black family, Black male/female relationships, contemporary social conditions, and African traditions.
