Biography   Lewis Carleton Ryan

The following biography is based on clipping files provided by the Librarian of the Escondido Public Library in Escondido, California. Sketches, writings, and some of the artist's woodblocks are located at the Escondido Library.

An artist resident of Escondido, California, Lewis Ryan was an illustrator, block printer, writer, and public benefactor who was born in Austin, Texas and in 1919, moved to California where he lived to be 88 years old. Many of his wood-block illustrations were published in the 1920s and 1930s in the Saturday Evening Post, McCalls, Ladies Home Journal, Westways, and the Los Angeles Times.
