A consummate Parisian, Louis Courtat found success in all areas of art, be it religious history, portraits, or allegory. In the area of genre the artist was extremely competent in creating a charming and adorable scene characteristic of peasant parent-child life.
As is often the situation with successful yet unheralded artists, little information is available on Courtat's background. It is known that he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Alexander Cabanel, a favorite artist of the Emperor Napoleon. A symbol of academic art in France, Cabanel was also an extremely popular and capable instructor.
