Mary Elizabeth Achey was active/lived in Washington, California, Kansas, Ohio.  Mary Achey is known for landscape, portrait-Indian, war camps.

Biography   Mary Elizabeth Achey

A native of Ohio, Mary Achey did more sketching in the American West between 1860 and 1885 than any other female artist, possibly excepting Mary Hallock Foote. She was the descendant of a French painter, and according to her accounts, she completed over 500 works in oil, watercolor, pen and ink and pencil. Her subjects included landscapes of California, Oregon and Washington, army fort scenes, wild west genre, portraits, and still lifes, and she supported her two sons with the sales of her paintings.

She lived for various time periods in Missouri, Colorado, California, Oregon, and Washington. Arriving in Colorado in 1860, she became the territory's first resident female artist and did views of Clear Creek that got attention in the De   ...  Displaying 750 of 3247 characters.
