Mary Frances Benton was born in New York in 1852. Mary (or May as she was called) arrived in San Francisco in 1855 with her mother Mary P. Benton. In 1886 the two women went to Europe to study the famous drawings in the Royal Library in Dresden. Following her mother's death, she married James H. Lafferty in 1911. She died in Kings County, CA on May 24, 1932.
