Biography   Mary-Russell Ferrell Colton

Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Mary Colton was a founder of the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff as well as a noted landscapist, Indian portraitist, sculptor, museum curator, and writer.  Of particular delight to her was painting the Hopi and Navajo Indians on site, directly from life.

In Philadelphia, she studied at Moore Institute and at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, 1904-09, with Henry Snell and Elliott Daingerfield. She had obvious talent for landscape painting and from a studio in Philadelphia, she worked as a commercial artist and restorer of paintings.  She became associated with a group of ten Philadelphia women artists (The Philadelphia Ten) with whom she continued to exhibit intermit   ...  Displaying 750 of 5214 characters.
