Harrie (alternately spelled Harrye) Rebecca Piper Smith was born on May 6, 1861, in Everett (formerly Blood Run), Pennsylvania, the daughter of William Piper Smith and Rachel Lavinia (Kay) Smith. By the late 1870s, the family, whose roots predated the Revolutionary War, migrated west, settling in Wichita, Kansas, where Harrie was raised. According to her California State Library index card, in 1880 she attended First Episcopal College (also known as Wichita College) in Wichita, and later enrolled in supplemental art studies in Chicago, Illinois.
