Newton A.Throop, engraver and painter, attracted attention for his oil painting of an Angus steer, named Advance, for the 1900 International Live Stock Exposition in Chicago.
He was a farmer from DuQuoin, Perry County, Illinois. He stood 5'6" tall with auburn hair, blue eyes and a sandy complexion. He was born in Perry County, Illinois, served during the Civil War with the Union Army with Company I, 6th Illinois Cavalry, and enlisted 9-17-1861 in DuQuoin, Perry Co., Illinois. He mustered in as a private on 11-19-1861 at Camp Butler, Illinois and re-enlisted on 3-30-1864 in Germantown, Tennessee. He mustered in 3-30-1864 in Memphis, Tennesseeout mustered out 11-5-1865 in Selma, Alabama.
