Biography Olive Cook
Olive Cook was an artist, historian and writer, born in Cambridge on February 20, 1912 and educated at Perse School for Girls and Newnham
College, where she studied modern languages. After working at the
National Gallery, she began painting and after the war she wrote the
publications 'Suffolk' (1948), 'Cambridgeshire: aspects of a county'
(1953), and 'Breckland' (1956) about the surrounding countryside.
In 1954 Olive married the photographer and architect Edwin Smith and
together they produced publications around English architecture; Smith's
photographs complimenting Cook's in depth historical writing.
Olive and Edwin moved to Saffron Walden in 1962, first living on the
