The Berlin artist, daughter-in-law of Käthe Kollwitz studied in Berlin with Max Hertwig, Ernst Böhm and Emil Orlik and published her first illustrated children's book in 1923. There were other children's book illustrations and a group of dream images before the artist increasingly devoted herself to printmaking and especially woodcut in the 1940s, with much of the early work being destroyed in World War II. From 1952-1962 Ottilie Ehlers-Kollwitz undertook numerous journeys through Europe and was inspired in her artistic work by the well-lit cities and landscapes in Southern Europe.
