LEWIS, Phillips Frisbie (1892-1930)
Born in Oakland, CA on Aug. 26, 1892 into a prominent pioneer family, Lewis was deaf at birth and was first taught to paint by his governess Rose May Craddock. He later studied at the California. College of Arts & Crafts in Berkeley for four years under Xavier Martinez, and in Monterey with Armin Hansen. He was a close friend and painting partner of Gottardo Piazzoni and often accompanied him on sketching trips.
