Biography Richard Hamilton Couper
A son of sculptor William Couper (1853-1942), Richard Couper was an impressionist landscape painter and etcher. His favorite medium was tempera, and he became so interested in that medium that he began the manufacture of tempera colors in 1915, when he moved from Rome to New York City at age 29.
His family livied in Italy when he was young, and, although he was born in Norfolk, Virginia on a family trip to the United States, he was raised at Villa Ball, the home of his grandfather, sculptor Thomas Ball. Richard Couper studied at the Art Students League in New York and in Paris and Rome where he was a member of the Circolo Artistico.
At art school in Paris, he met and subsequently married Mildred Cooper (1887-1974), a composer
