Sister Agnes Berchmans was active/lived in New Brunswick / Canada, Italy.  Sister Agnes Berchmans is known for religious figure painting.

Biography   Sister Agnes Berchmans


Sister Agnes Berchmans, nee Julia Alma Landry, became a prolific painter of religious subjects.  She was the daughter of Dr. Alexander Landry and Genevieve Bourque and was born in 1879 at Bouctouche, New Brunswick.

She entered the Sisters of Charity in 1896 while a teenager. Her order, recognizing her talents, sent her to Florence, Italy to study with Filadelfo Simi.

She completed 135 religious paintings for the Motherhouse Chapel at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax. The Chapel was subsequently destroyed by fire. She painted until she was ninety-three when poor eyesight forced her to give up her work,

Her remaining work is said to number approximately 350 canvases.
