Biography Verplanck Colvin
Verplanck Colvin conducted a twenty-eight year long survey of the Hudson River Valley in New York state. He was a lawyer and topographical engineer and had explored that region extensively before receiving a stipend in 1872 to begin an official survey. His drawings depict mining scenes, townscapes, and mountain views including camping activities, and these works had atmospheric qualities indicating an interest in art beyond simple reporting of details.
He used his extensive drawings to give reports to the New York State legislature and also used his engineering skills to improve his surveying equipment.
