Vilis Ciesnieks (1908-1989) Latvian/American
Born in Riga, Latvia, Vilis Ciesnieks was to become a noted graphic artist. He initially studied at the Riga national "high school," and was a pupil of N. Puzirevki. He participated in a number of art exhibitions and worked in the National Theater as a decorator.
Facing increasing persecution - the artist was considered by the Nazi's to be one of those producing "degenerate art" - he moved to Belgium in 1944 and to Britain in 1949. He immigrated to the United States with his wife in 1959 and settled in Chicago where he continued his work as a commercial artist, producing book illustrations, posters and advertising.
