Born in Oakland, California, Melvina Cames, known as Vina, became a painter and lithographer, especially noted for her landscapes of California and Wyoming as well as still lifes, figure studies, and portraits.
She was raised in Oakland and Eureka, California, and in 1925, married Louis Cames, who worked for the railroad. The couple lived in Laramie, Wyoming, and she worked for the Works Progress Administration and the Federal Emergency Relief Administration.
She studied art at the University of Wyoming, and the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center where her teachers were Boardman Robinson, Henry Varnum Poor, and Frank Mechau. In Wyoming, she became well known and won local and national awards. Exhibition venues included the Den
