Walter Colton

 (1797 - 1851)

Biography   Walter Colton


Amateur landscape artist, Walter Colton was born in Rutland County (Vt). He taught at Middletown Academy (Conn) for four years and later served as editor of the American Spectator and Washington City Chronicle in 1829-30 in Washington, D.C.

He was appointed a naval chaplain in 1830 and from 1831 to 1834 he served with the Mediterranean squadron. Over the next decade he lived in Philadelphia, devoting most of his time to journalism and writing travel books. In 1845 he went to California, where he remained until 1849. He then returned to Philadelphia, where he died, January 22, 1851.
