Born in the late 1800s in Hastings, Nebraska to prominent parents, James N and Hettie Derickson Clarke, William W. Clarke began his career on the staff of the American Boy magazine at Detroit, Michigan. He studied in New York at the Art Students League, and then in Paris, France.
Returning from Europe, he focused on finding a way to attract attention to himself, so he painted a scene he knew very well from his boyhood--the Platte River in Nebraska "when the hunters, having cows trained to circle, the ducks and geese are able to approach within easy range of their quarry by hiding themselves beside or behind the cows. He painted this scene, giving it he title: Hunting Geese With Cows. Too modest to offer this work
