The following bio-sketch is based on the annotations in Artists in Virginia before 1900, with some inclusions by Bruce Kusrow:
Willie Henderson Caskie was born in Virginia in 1834. Nothing is known of his formal artistic training. During the Civil War he served as a major in Pickett's Brigade of The Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A. At least one pencil on paper sketch by Caskie that pictures a Virginia Confederate unit camp scene, and is entitled "Near Bunker Hill, Oct. 25, 1862," has survived. Following the close of the war in 1865, Caskie settled in Richmond, Virginia where he worked as a portrait artist.
