Known for large, expressive drawings on paper using a wax-resist drawing process, and oil painting on panel, Lewis' imagery mixes the representational and abstract.
Born December 21, 1951, in Houlton, Maine, David Dodge Lewis has been active in Maine, North Carolina and Viriginia, serving as the William W. Elliott Professor of Fine Arts at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia. 

He earned  M.A. and M.F.A.degrees from East Carolina University in painting, and he has taken classes at the Art Students League in New York (1978) and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston (1974-75).
