I have an old painting by A Pope
T. DeMarco (07/04/2009)
We have had a painting in our family for at least 40 years. It is of a German Sheperd dog and a young child(3'ish) who is sitting beside the dog. The child is dressed in a very old style pale pink one piece outfit. The child's right hand is on the dog's left paw. In the bottom left corner it has printed "A Pope". Does anyone have any information on this painting???

Kathy Tilman original or not?
mia (06/03/2009)
It does not sound like and Alexander Pope painting. You can find out if you take it to the leading expert on Alexander Pope. Try to remember most of his work is known. If this painting is not known, there were many painters trying to copy him,his work, and trying to sell it off as his work. The leading expert will want to e-ray,take a sample to date it. If it is in the same time frame, you will want a signature analysis to prove it is an original. This process can be expensive.

to Gary Tate,, the answer to your question, he began from the beinning of his career, but in 1870 he began signing A.Pope to not be confused with poet A.Pope

Alexander Pope 11 "Brook Hill Dog"
Patrice (11/27/2008)
I have the same piece of tin art which Susan mentioned on 05/18/2008. My "Brook Hill Dog" doesn't have its original frame but I do know it hung in a tavern prior to 1925. The self framed pieces of advertising are more valuable if left in the frame. I have found a town named Brook Hill in Kentucky but nothing yet on the distillery.

wood carving

I have an A. Pope Jr. after-the-hunt polychromed wood carving that depicts a woodcock and bobwhite quail hanging dead on a palin walnut panel. I often try to find another example for sale or at auction so that I can get an idea of its value but have for years come up dry. What is a Pope woodcarving worth?
